A lot of people are curious about mediumship but they’re a little bit afraid of it. Is mediumship something to be afraid of, and does it come from the devil?

Van Praagh: I love that. People in my audience will ask, “Is there anything evil about this?” And I’ll say, “No, not at all.” First for all, let me say, everybody is born with a sixth sense, which is intuition. Intuition means into the soul; it’s the language of the soul. Babies have to have it in order to survive. A medium is not only psychic, they’re also able to attune their vibration, or energy if you will, to a higher level of consciousness, another level of awareness. So if you think of it like radio stations, and all around us are frequencies and waves of energy, microwaves, radio waves, television waves…there’s a certain frequency or wave that mediums can attune themselves to which is a higher frequency, and that’s really the spiritual dimensions. That’s what I can do as a medium, tuning into those higher dimensions, I’m able to tune into that and receive impressions – whether it’s feelings of things, visions of things, words of things, memories if you will. We are, first and foremost, spiritual beings having a physical experience, not the other way around. We’re souls walking on the earth. It’s our natural heritage of who we are.

Mediumship is not evil or of the devil. That’s man-made belief system with religious limitations. The Catholic Church were extremely aware of all the esoteric knowledge in the Middle Ages, and actually the Vatican’s library is filled with all esoteric, paranormal and metaphysical books and doctrines ever created. To understand these works, one would realize that they teach that each one of us has the power of God within them and they don’t need a church for that power. This information had to be kept out of the common man’s hands because the church did not want to give away their political and monetary power.

They had all of the secrets of the elements and they knew everything about energy and farious forms of mediumship, but how could you control the masses if they revealed all of these secrets? You control the masses by controlling how they think and instilling fear into people. Anything that gives people freedom – which is insight into these Universal truthsthings, mediumship, psychics – would be something they wouldn’t need the church for. Why would they, if they can do it on their own? And if they can tune into God on their own, what the heck are we going to use the organized church for? That’s where is stems from. It’s quite the opposite.

What do you say to skeptics?

Van Praagh: I believe everyone has a right to believe the way they are going to believe. I think it is good to be skeptical but NOT cynical. Because with a skeptic their minds are at least open to the possibilities. With a cynic, their minds are already made up. There is no changing their paradigm. Many don’t want to change, because by changing their belief system, they must change their investment of how they look at the world. It would be much easier to negate somebody or something, than to take responsibility and to also admit that your point of view was limited and wrong. I know with the work I do with mediumship.

If someone professes to be a medium, I need them to bring through evidence of life after death in the form of details and proof. By bringing through proof, it s a face or situation that removes all doubt. Of course each person may require their own level of proof, but it is not the medium’s job to make open up the skeptic and make them instantly spiritually aware. The medium presents information for others to witness, question and understand. I believe there will always be skeptics in this line of work, because so much of skepticism is based on fear. Fear of the unknown and as I previously mentioned, some don’t want to do the work in order properly understand the mechanics of the work.

A lot of parents have children who they believe have abilities, what can they do to encourage this gift?

Van Praagh: Children, are naturally psychic. Remember, they have just come from the spirit world, so their mindset is of spirit. Their mindset is of knowingness. They have not been taught yet about judgment. They have not been taught how to hate. They haven’t been taught conditioning. That happens about 7 or 8 years of age when they say, “No, no, no, you’re not allowed” or “No, no, no, you don’t see this.”

When children tell adults they have imaginary playmates, the adult is so quick to tell the child it is not real, when most of the time, the child is actually having a clairvoyant experience and witnessing spirit. Children are tuned into Spirit.. No doubt about it. A child is very honest. They’ll tell you exactly what they’re seeing, and they’ll tell you exactly what’s going on. I think children see someone’s energy. I think they see their parents’ energy and children are taught not to trust adults right away because I think many times adults will say something out of their mouth and what they’re saying out of their mouth doesn’t match them energetically, and the kid sees energetically what’s going on and they say to themselves, “Wait a minute, this doesn’t make sense.”

I wrote a book I recommend to parents and children interested in the topic called Looking Beyond: A Teen’s Guide to the Spirit World, and it’s a book for parents. There are simple exercises for kids. I wrote it on kid’s level, but really a lot of adults have read it and they love the book.

If someone has lost someone that they loved – maybe a husband or a wife or a boyfriend or girlfriend, what can they do to connect with them?

Van Praagh: Easy. A couple of things. The first thing they can do is remember that spirits will always be around us; they share the space we’re in. So it’s really attuning themselves to the space around them. And the spirits will hear the living’s thoughts thoughts all the time. They’re attuned to the wavelengths, the emanations of thought, that come out of us. In their dimension – it’s a very mental dimension – so they receive our prayers and thoughts appear as solid, they do hear us.

The second thing is to remember that you can contact them through your dream state. If you go to sleep at night and you say, “Honey, please come through to me and let me know you’re okay. Just come as a dream state,” and then let that go, you’ll connect with them. Don’t try so hard, because if you try too hard you’ll block it. So just send that out, and they’ll come through to you. Maybe it could be in a couple of days, it could be in a couple of weeks, it could be in a couple of months – but they will come to you if you just release it like that.

Here’s one other tip that works: You can write a letter to them. Sit down and write them a letter with your personal handwriting – and fold up that letter, put it in an envelope, put it away somewhere, and on your calendar write 2 weeks later, write that you’re going to have a session with them. In 2 weeks you come back, and now you will write a letter from them to you and just see what comes through. It’s astounding what comes through. I’m telling you, clients of mine have come to me said, “That’s amazing. All these things come through, and I didn’t know some of these things until I checked them out and they made sense.” Yeah, it’s pretty cool. And the third way, of course, is meditation. Really go within, quiet the mind, go with the silence – it’s through the silence that you begin to hear the subtle nuances of spirit, that we get to feel them and see them. It’s just closing up the rational mind, the critical mind, and really when you’re in the silence you begin to hear them, the nuances. So if you can practice meditation, that’s another way.
