Utah Tarot Card Reader Turns Skeptics Into Believers

Amid the chaos of a bustling coffee shop, Ella McNeil sits quietly at a booth against the wall with a laptop open and her belongings at her side. Customers stream in and out of the shop all day, but every so often one will sit down at the booth with McNeil and begin chatting. Eventually, McNeil pulls out a deck of animal tarot cards and begins shuffling them. Based on the client’s time, she lays out a number of them on the table. McNeil then uses the laid-out cards as a guide to explore the past, present and future of the client.

“Each card is a lesson that we can learn about the universe and ourselves,” McNeil said. “I feel like it’s my calling to help people and to help teach them life lessons.”

For about four months now, McNeil has been a fixture at the Coffee Pod coffee shop in Provo. McNeil offers her psychic and animal speak tarot card readings twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Her success is evident by her growing number of repeat clients and those who seek her services by the recommendations of friends.

“I have 100 percent faith in her,” said Danny Stewart, a humanities professor at Utah Valley University. “She has that rare ability to pull the veil aside and see past it from time to time.”

McNeil has been interested in alternative medicine since an early age, however, it wasn’t until her 20s that McNeil purchased her first deck of tarot cards and began giving readings. After 15 years of being a business manager for various companies, McNeil opted to read tarot cards professionally. There is a multitude of tarot cards with different themes, but McNeil chose a deck that uses the personality of 44 different animals because of its Native American origins.

“Every animal has its own unique personality just like people do,” McNeil said. “The reason I like this is because it translates to the human condition.”

A full tarot card reading includes nine card positions that represent various aspects of the client’s life, with the animal’s personality correlating to that specific aspect. For example, a bear represents introspection while a badger represents aggressiveness. Should a badger card be located in a position that represents the past, McNeil uses her intuition to discover what in the client’s past may have had an aggressive quality to it.

By the nature of the readings, many of the sessions involve intimate conversations and revealing personal information. Yet, McNeil’s sincere demeanor helps clients get the most out of the readings and provides advice for improving one’s life. For one client, McNeil accurately identified a negative personality trait that was impeding the success of the client in her chosen career path.

“I’m just opening up a light that’s already there and giving them hope,” McNeil said.

Kellie Wilson, a repeat client of McNeil’s, is confident in the significance of the readings.

“I think it’s more productive than going to a therapist,” Wilson said. “It just gives people some perspective and goals to work on.”

Undoubtedly some are skeptical of McNeil’s skills. However, many clients enthusiastically vouch for her.

“I give her a tremendous amount of accolades for what she does,” Stewart said. “She is able to help you through your life.”

Marnie Roberts, owner of the Coffee Pod, cites numerous comments on the Coffee Pod’s Facebook page as proof that McNeil has been influential in the life of her clients.

“It’s been nothing but positive, good feedback from people,” Roberts said. “I was definitely skeptical, but she changed my mind.”

As for McNeil, she welcomes skeptics.

“It makes me feel like a woman of integrity when I can do what I say I can do,” McNeil said. “Sometimes you have to believe in yourself when the people around you are telling you to do something different.”

Psychic Books: Confessions of a Tarot Reader’

tarot reading book

You most likely know her name from years of food writing, or maybe as the EMT whose memoir, “Ambulance Girl,” was the basis for a movie staring Kathy Bates. But Ridgefield resident Jane Stern is also a fourth-generation tarot reader.

She has a new book coming out in June, “Confessions of a Tarot Reader: Practical Advice from This Realm and Beyond.”

What might you expect from this book? That depends on what you’re looking for and on your perspective on tarot cards.

I think similar advice could be presented in several different ways, but until you come across the advice you need in the way you need to hear it, it may not take root with you. Maybe this book will be the conduit that speaks to you.

In 22 chapters and under 200 pages, Stern walks the reader through the major arcana of the tarot deck. There are 78 cards in a full tarot deck but, Stern points out, the 22 major arcana of cards are “the heart of the tarot.”

She takes the reader on a journey, following the Fool through the deck. Along the way, she illustrates the significance of each card with examples from clients for whom she has done readings.
It makes for a readable type of self-help book — if you see yourself in one or more of the circumstances described in the book, you may get some insight on how to move forward.

Stern describes herself as a “clean reader,” meaning she is not a witch or medium. She’s not a “party psychic.” In the book, she comes across more as a counselor or advisor who uses the tarot deck as a tool to address her client’s issues.

With Stern as the guide, what may be to some a mysterious, otherworldly, possibly dangerous thing to do becomes more of a practical approach to facing up to the reality of one’s own life. As with any adviser, some clients follow the advice from their readings, some do not.

Each chapter begins with a quote from a different source. The sources range from literary figures to psychoanalysts, political figures, playwrights and religious texts.

Some will bring a smile to your face — all have some connection to aspects of a particular card being discussed.

A touch of mystery is also found at the beginning of each chapter. The chapters open with the illustration of a card from a particular tarot deck Stern favors. The richly saturated hues and moody lighting of each image convey a touch of mystery throughout the pages.

This book does not equip a neophyte to go into business as a tarot reader, but does shine some light on the possible meanings of the major arcana cards as they may turn up in a reading.

It educates the reader about the tarot deck, and it may provide advice the reader needs in the way they need to receive it. Whatever draws the reader in, he or she will find an interesting read.

Tarot Card Reader Releases New Book

tarot card reader maine

A Maine Tarot Reader Jeanne Fiorini, who has been performing readings for over 20 years in South Portland has recently released a new book.

The new Tarot Book is titled “Tarot Spreads and Layouts” and is focused on the teaching of the Tarot craft. Tarot Reader Jeanne Fiorini is also the founder of Tarot Works which is a Main based company which devotes itself to teaching Tarot Card Reading and spreading the knowledge of the craft.

Interviewed by keepmecurrent.com, Tarot Reader Jeanne Fiorini gives a Question and Answer session with the paper.

Q: How did you get interested in tarot reading? How long did it take you to master the reading?
A: I like to say that the Tarot is like the board game “Othello” in that it takes “a minute to learn and a lifetime to master.” A person can learn the basic tenets of the Tarot system in a few months; to really have a working knowledge of the system takes longer. But something that is true about the Tarot, and what drew me to the system in the first place, is that useful information can be had -whether you’re a beginner or an advanced student – if you’re using effective methods. The new “Tarot Spreads and Layouts” book is chocked full of effective methods!

Q: How accurate is a tarot reading? Can it really predict the future?
A: The “telling the future” aspect of Tarot is part of the misinformation that swirls around the deck and how it is used. The Tarot is nothing more than an extension of our own consciousness. There is nothing magical or mystical or otherworldly about it. The cards themselves are nothing more than pieces of paper with pictures on them. But in the same way that a straw helps us draw water from a glass, the Tarot allows us to access parts of consciousness of which we are not necessarily aware.
The quantum reality of the 21st century is the fact that the world – and our experience of it – is in a constant state of flux and change. We no longer have the luxury (or the curse) of a future that is written in stone. Using the Tarot can help clarify current situations, confirm a person’s intuitive thoughts and knowing, validate a person’s self-awareness, support a person in the attainment of goals and other matters of personal development, as yes, can put forth a “most-likely outcome.” But these projected outcomes are more about percentages and “waves of probability” than fortune telling, and shouldn’t be taken as absolute truths in any way, shape, or form.

Q: On your website, tarotworks.com, the catchphrase of TarotWorks is “Tarot as a tool for authentic living.” What does that mean?
A: The best use of the Tarot helps people become creatively involved in their own unfolding process: to build a future of their own making, to become the hero in their own story, to manifest a life in which they can be fully invested and true to themselves. This doesn’t mean that we can have everything that we want, but it does mean that we can use all available tools and abilities to be as fully present in our life as possible. Working with the Tarot can help us accomplish this by expanding our conscious awareness, allowing us to see our options more clearly, and by validating thoughts and feelings thereby giving voice to our hopes, dreams, and visions for the future.

Q: You do tarot readings through telephone calls and Skype sessions. How do this differ than in person readings?
A: The Internet has changed the face of many businesses and this includes Tarot reading. Many of my clients live out-of-state, which makes face-to-face readings impossible. With telephone readings, it used to be the case that the client was not able to get a visual impression of the cards. But now with Skype technology that problem is erased. So, if a client in Minnesota- or Sweden-wants an in-person session, if we can work out the time zones we can make it happen! People don’t need to share the same physical space in order for a Tarot reading to work. The energy and information of the reading happens without physical proximity being an issue- another example of quantum principles in action. The science of the 21st century supports what metaphysical systems throughout the ages have consistently displayed: that the universe and everything in it exists within a web of physical and energetic connections. The Tarot is simply one way to access our intrinsic connections to other parts of the web of life.

Q: Who is the target audience for your book and what do you hope readers take from reading it?
A: The new book is exactly what the title indicates: a user’s guide for beginning and intermediate students of the Tarot. There are many, many books available about Tarot card meanings, but there are very few good books containing simple and effective methods for using the cards. Each year millions of people buy Tarot card decks and companion books, and are left with the question, “Now what do I do? How do I get helpful and useful information from these cards?” This would be like buying a generator with a complete description of all the component parts but not being given any directions for how to hook it up. My book is the one to read after learning some basic Tarot card meanings.

For any Maine Tarot Card Reading enthusiasts, Tarot Reader Jeanne Fiorini will be performing a presentation at the Maine Mall Borders bookstore on March 15 at 7 pm.  The presentation will be an interactive discussion of the major points of the book, and will take real-life questions from the audience to demonstrate some of the simple cards methods described therein. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and for signing.
